Welcome to the Newville Historical Society
of the Big Spring Area

Founded in 1966, the Newville Historical Society's mission is to collect, preserve and promote the history of the Big Spring area. Housed in the former Warren Welch home which was built in the 1860s by S. J. McCannen, the Society has a museum with three display rooms and a non-circulating research library which contains an extensive collection of genealogies on area families, a photographic library and an obituary collection. Materials can be photocopied for a nominal fee and research services are available if you are unable to visit the Society in person. Please call (717) 776-6210 to make research requests.
Five times a year, the Society sponsors presentations on locally relevant topics led by well-known and knowledgeable speakers designed to engage and educate the membership and the community. Our museum holdings include a wide variety of local artifacts, and several major exhibits showcasing this collection are displayed throughout the year. There is also an on-site museum store where artwork from local artists as well as books and other ephemera can be purchased.
Membership in the Society is open to anyone with an interest in the history of the Newville and Big Spring areas. A printable membership form outlining membership levels and pricing is available here.
The Newville Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and, as such, welcomes tax-deductible donations.
